Since its inception, Buschow Henley has sought to work across a number of sectors. We believe an architecture of qualities is not borne through specialization but achieved through applying the knowledge learnt on all building types. This helps cut across convention to produce buildings that are responsive both to the client and users needs and to the context in which they sit. Since 1995 the practice has undertaken a wide range of work in education, the arts, housing, healthcare, offices, masterplanning and urban regeneration. In addition to new-build schemes we also have a detailed understanding of adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
We have recently (2009) won an RIBA Award for our Music, Arts and Assembly building at St. Benedicts School. Previous to this, the practice has won RIBA Awards for Architecture with the Shepherdess Walk mixed-use building (2000) and with offices and studios for TalkBack Thames (2002), a Housing Design Award for York Place in Leeds (2003) and an AIA/UK Excellence in Design Award Commendation (2007) and a Civic Trust Award Commendation (2008) for the St. John’s Therapy Centre. In ‘Best In Europe – Office’ (2004), TalkBack was judged to be one of the five best new office buildings in Europe by German journal AIT. In 2000 Buschow Henley was shortlisted for Building ‘Young Practice of the Year’. In 2002 Simon Henley was shortlisted for Corus ‘Young Architect of the Year’ and in 2005 Gavin Hale-Brown & Simon Henley were selected for the 40Under40 UK Architects’ exhibition at the V&A in London. In 2008 we won Healthcare Architect of the Year.
Major competition wins include the regeneration of Chatham’s historic Royal Dockyards on St. Mary’s Island, Kent (2001), Caldicott School Performing Arts Building (2001), Bagby Airfield (2007) and Lambeth ACCORD (2008). Other notable competitions include the DfES sponsored Schoolworks Kingsdale School, 2nd place (2000) and IPPR’s Designs on Democracy Letchworth Town Hall, 2nd place (2003).
Our work has also been exhibited at the RIBA in London, RIBA Heinz Gallery in London, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, The Ideal Home Show, London, at The Lighthouse in Glasgow and by The Van Alen Institute in New York. Our work has been widely published in the UK and abroad.
