Bedford Modern’s estate, constructed using the CLASP system, was completed in 1972. Since then the school has been extended in an adhoc manner compromising the existing buildings’ functionality. Uncontrolled development has produced a situation now where further expansion has been rendered almost impossible.
During 2007-2008 we developed a masterplan for the school campus which both provides a structure for future developments (both known and unknown) and liberates space within the existing buildings allowing the removal of previous detrimental courtyard infill additions.
Our scheme continues the thinking of the original architects. The school, in its hilltop setting, currently extends over two terraces. The masterplan proposes a third terrace for future development. New earth-sheltered buildings provide the additional teaching facilities, increase the amount of play space with ball courts on their roofs, and enrich the school grounds and landscape setting.
A phased programme of work will involve the redevelopment of the Howard Hall school theatre, new music and drama department, science school, sports facilities and main entrance creating a new public face for the school. In addition we will upgrade the existing estate/ building stock (CLASP system) to meet or exceed current environmental performance standards mitigating the need for comprehensive demolition & redevelopment.
The process involved detailed consultation with staff and pupils and it is envisaged that the build programme will be used as an educational aid to support curriculum development. The initial phase of the work will commence in 2009.
The work was carried out in conjunction with engineers Buro Happold.
