Wandsworth Bridge Road

The new Primary Care Centre in Fulham will transform its context. It is a contemporary civic building that will become a focus for both healthcare and community activities. Its openness should itself stimulate interest in the buildings activities.

The PCC is a 4-storey building comprising a 3-storey red brick structure that conforms with the neighbouring storey heights, with a fourth storey pavilion, set back to reduce the scale of the building. The ground floor is raised for external dignity and internal privacy. There is a large canopy along Broughton Road Approach marking the entrance on the corner of Wandsworth Bridge Road. The Wandsworth Bridge Road elevation takes its cue from the scale of the neighbouring Edwardian houses on the street. A ground floor polished aluminium shopfront takes its cue from the adjoining painted timber ones. Above casement windows are aligned and proportioned to match the upper storey sash windows. The Broughton Road Approach is characterised by a cruciform composition of windows revealing the internal entrance ramp, waiting spaces, lift and corridor windows.

This scheme has been developed in the context of the Ealing Hammersmith Fulham Hounslow LIFT Strategic Service Development Plan and conforms to the large premises type. The new centre will become an important focus for care within the local neighbourhood. The design reflects the required range of services, organising the building to reflect the service philosophy and functional requirements. The building has been clearly zoned with different uses on each floor. Clinical rooms are restricted to the ground and first floor, with staff accommodation above. The PCC provides an 'umbrella' to shelter a range of health and social care facilities that may come and go over time.
