Housing

Buschow Henley’s work in housing has been recognised through a Housing Design Award for York Place in Leeds; an RIBA Award, the National Housing Design Award (runners-up), and a commendation for Blueprint Architecture Awards, Best Residential Building of the Year for Shepherdess Walk in London; and a Sustainability Award for Two Houses at the Brick Awards. Outside practice we have taught on University College London’s Housing Futures MSc.

In 2001 we won an international design competition to develop a 6.8-hectare site on St. Mary’s Island in Kent for a joint venture between SEEDA and Countryside Properties. We have worked with various registered social landlords and private developers including the Manhattan Loft Corporation, the Crown Estate and Peabody Trust. In 2007 we developed a masterplan for the 34-hectare Rochester Riverside site for Bellway and the London and Quadrant Group, and exhibited at the Ideal Home Show our scheme for 270 apartments in Brent Cross for developers Multiplex & Hammerson.

We are currently working with Renewal, Tower Homes, the Metropolitan Housing Trust, Hightown Praetorian Churches and London and Quadrant Group on 290 residential units in London and the home counties.

We understand the requirements of the Code for Sustainable Homes, Life-Time Homes, the Housing Corporation’s Design Quality Standards & Revised Standards, Secure by Design and other best practice.

Housing is the fabric of any settlement – it is a physical and emotional harbour for people, it provides the foundation for community and regeneration, and requires an understanding of anthropology, cities and economic modern methods of construction. Crucially, good housing has a huge impact on a person’s quality of life- in talking to clients, planners and future residents we see this as a priority.
