Lootch Pavillion, Moscow

The pavilion will be the
centrepiece of Lootch (Russian for light 'ray'), a 30,000sqm regeneration
of a former light bulb factory, housed in a collection of pre-revolutionary
brick buildings.
The key feature of the Moscow pavilion, commissioned by Horus Capital Investment is its crystalline façade. The order of the surrounding building's elevations and language of brick construction inform its design. The folded elevations of glass and polished stainless steel reflect their surroundings, the old brickwork and new verdant landscape, which will change depending on the time of day and the season. The optical properties of glass to be transparent, to reflect and refract are juxtaposed with the equally reflective stainless steel surfaces. Inside a heavy concrete structure supports a single linear room. Underneath, the 'crypt' is lit intermittently via the crystalline volumes of the deep facade construction.
Functionally the pavilion will be required to provide several uses. On a day-to-day basis it will provide a place for meetings, coffees and meals for a working population of about 3000. Occasionally it will become a venue for conferences, seminars and lectures and from time to time be used as a temporary gallery. In addition it will also offer an event space for resident companies to provide cocktail receptions, launch parties or corporate events.
The project is currently being developed to detail design with UK-based engineers Buro Happold and Swiss-based facade engineer Emmer Pfenninger Partner AG. Completion is expected in early 2008.
