Olympics Stratford

This invited one day masterclass aimed to provide a re-reading of Stratford through the experience of the Olympics as well as a better understanding of the games for residents or visitors. The scheme reveals a series of architectural interventions designed to stimulate curiosity whilst developing an understanding of the scale of achievement of Olympic athletes.

The often difficult to comprehend achievements of world class athletes becomes a palpable reality when understood through everyday experiences and matched against recognisable objects. The various structures and markings are intended to turn everyday occurrences into memorable events which resonate with the spirit of Londons 2012 bid.

The one hundred metres sprint event is signified by a 100m long ¥information box located in the west shopping mall of the Stratford Centre. This also represents the shortest and fastest route between two points and is linked to the idea of running to work or taking a short cut. Horizontal distance is denoted by new cycle racks and a zebra crossing. The former correspond in height and spacing to running hurdles, while the latter indicates distances achieved in the long-jump matched to the width of a road.

Height achievements are signalled by two structures. The first is a new 2.35metre high bus stop representing the high jump record. The second, a 15m high viewing platform (the height of a high diving board) offers a clear view of the Olympic site.

Lastly, weightlifting feats are explained through graphics printed on the local supermarket shopping bags and a telephone box. The former enables shoppers to compare the weight they are carrying against the world power lift record which happens to be the weight of a cast iron telephone box.

The project has been selected for display at the Urban Space by Design competition at the GLA City Hall in June 2005.
