Our strategy for this competition was generated by the desire to connect the site visually and physically with the centre of Waterford. The aim was to feed the city centre with new facilities, as well as develop existing patterns of movement and land use.
The brief for this international architectural and urban design competition was to produce a design for a 10 hectare site in Waterford North Quays, including the design of a new Venue building for the city. Our stated strategy manifested itself in a series of residential 'piers' generated from the vistas of the old City. Interspersed amongst these ordered elements are bands of office space, two new bridges, public routes, and local events: kiosks, public spaces, framed views and, not least, the Venue Building itself. The combination of set-piece public plazas and smaller, garden squares – spaces of congregation and spaces of contemplation - create a framework for the many buildings and uses proposed.
The Venue Building celebrates the enormity and grandeur of the existing silos. A raised auditorium opens the ground level useable as foyer, auditorium, trade hall and hotel fringed with cafés, shops, kiosks and activities to create a destination in Waterford.
Buildings have been conceived as flexible, naturally ventilated spaces roofed with photo-voltaic cells to ensure sustainable development with minimal impact on the environment both locally and globally. |
